What do you want a surveyor to do?
Code of Practice for commercial use
Review the websites. Choose two or three surveyors.
What to ask the surveyor:
Confirm current membership of an organisation.
Confirm the surveyor has PI insurance cover.
Confirm the surveyor carries out your type of survey.
Enquire if the surveyor has carried out a survey on your type of vessel before.
What to request from the surveyor:
An estimate of the cost of the survey. Ask for any expenses and VAT to be included.
The name of one or two clients who are prepared to give references.
The timescale for carrying out the survey and report.
Select your surveyor. Ask for a firm quotation and a copy of the Terms and Conditions listing everything included and excluded from the survey.
On receipt of the quotation and Terms and Conditions, if you are satisfied, send your surveyor a letter of appointment.

Aims
A coalition of organisations representing small craft surveyors working together to enhance the professional status of the surveyor and to promote understanding of these activities by the marine industry and the boat-buying public.
Objectives
To review and maintain standards amongst existing surveyors and assist new surveyors to achieve good professional standards
To enhance the overall services offered to surveyors by joint activities from time to time to review and maintain training and development opportunities for new and existing surveyors
To work together to represent the coalition's surveyors interests as a whole with Governments and other organisations across the world
To maintain a review of international standards, practices and organisations pertaining to the surveying industry
To raise the status of the small craft surveyor ("surveyors") as members of relevant bodies
